PLANTING GUIDE

Heathers

Different varieties of Heather will give all year round colour.  In spring the Erica’s-Carnea, Erigena and Darleyensis are followed by Callunas and Daboecias from July to autumn.  Then come the winter flowering varieties Carnea and Erigena from January to April.  There are also the coloured foliage ones that range from yellow, orange, gold to bronze.  All varieties undoubtedly look good with conifers.

Most heathers prefer an open sunny site.  Many heathers will not tolerate lime soils but E. Vagans,
E. Carnea, E. Erigena will.  They require well drained sites that do not dry out and are best planted in groups of 3 or 5.  Heathers are generally maintenance free but when planting, first apply a liberal amount of peat and do not allow them to dry out in the early stages.  They do not require fertiliser but should be trimmed after flowering, especially the summer flowering varieties.

Conifers

Like Heathers, Conifers have the advantage in giving all year around interest.
They come in many shapes and colours and are hardy and do not require much maintenance.
Most of those we supply are dwarf and slow growing varieties.  Dwarf conifers will remain small for a long time, and should never become that large.

Generally conifers do not require too much fertiliser, but the faster growing ones should be fed more regularly.  Most require a fairly open position and should never be crowded.  To keep to size required regular trimming may be required.
